What is Orbera®?
Orbera® is a type of gastric balloon that is placed into the stomach, where it takes up space to help patients feel fuller faster when eating. This balloon curbs hunger and reduces the number of calories a person can consume in one sitting. This gastric balloon helps our patients with portion control to prevent overeating.
Surgery is not required to place the balloon, which makes it a popular option for many of our patients. Instead of surgically placing the balloon into the stomach, the deflated balloon is guided into the stomach through the esophagus, where it is placed into the stomach and then filled with saline solution. It only takes about 10 to 20 minutes to place the gastric balloon and the procedure can be performed right here in our office by our board-certified gastroenterologist.
What Should I Expect from Orbera®?
Once Orbera® is placed, the gastric balloon will remain in the stomach for six months before it is removed. During this time, it’s normal for many of our patients to lose anywhere from 20 to 50 pounds, particularly within the first three months. Over the next six months, your body will adjust to the reduction in calories, so that once the gastric balloon is removed you will continue to maintain good portion control.
