Common Causes of Abdominal Pain and When To Seek Help

The abdominal cavity is home to several different organs, which provides a multitude of opportunities for abdominal pain in Katy, TX. Dr. Kevin Marks of Premier Gastroenterology offers diagnosis and treatment options for common causes of abdominal pain. Abdominal pain is located between the chest and the pelvis.

It is important to seek help for abdominal pain when it has lasted for more than just a couple of days, when it appears to be worsening, or when you develop a fever. All of these can be indications that the problem is serious.

The type of pain you are feeling will help to indicate the type of pain that it is.

Generalized pain is located in more than half of the abdominal area. This may result from a stomach virus, indigestion, or gas. It can also mean lactose intolerance, food poisoning, food allergies, or an indication of a bowel blockage.

Localized pain is most likely caused by an organ. There are many in this area, including the appendix, the gallbladder, the pancreas, the liver and kidneys, the stomach, the ovaries, and the uterus.

Cramp-like pain can be a virus. It may be caused by gas or bloating. When this is accompanied by a fever and has lasted for several days, it probably requires a visit to your doctor.

Colicky pain comes in waves and is often very severe.  It is often the result of gallstones or kidney stones.

If your abdomen is sensitive to touch, this can be an indication of a more generalized problem. Pancreatitis can cause the belly to be painful. It is usually at the top of the belly, comes on suddenly, and is quite severe. When the pain is located on the lower right side, this can be an indication of appendicitis. But, there are other things like a ruptured ovarian cyst that can cause the abdominal cavity to feel very painful.

Before you decide to get help, determine as best you can where exactly the pain is located and what type of pain it is. This will help the doctor diagnose exactly what is causing your abdominal pain in Katy, TX.
