What Is Acid Reflux?

Acid reflux is a medical condition where the acid from the stomach backs up into the esophagus and causes irritation. If it happens infrequently, it is simple acid reflux, but if it occurs more than twice a week, it may have developed into GERD. (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).

Causes of Acid Reflux

Many things can cause acid reflux, but most of them are things that you can control. Certain foods, especially those that are acidic or fatty, can cause acid reflux. The most common culprits are:

  • Garlic
  • Onions
  • Chocolate
  • Red wine
  • Spicy food
  • Acid flood
  • Greasy food
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus fruits
  • Peppermint

This is a very partial list of foods that can trigger acid reflux. Other things that can lead to the condition are:

  • Obesity
  • Reclining within 3 hours of eating
  • Asthma
  • Hiatal hernia
  • Smoking
  • Eating late at night
  • Eating large meals
  • Pregnancy
  • Medication

Symptoms of Acid Reflux

The main symptom of acid reflux is the burning sensation that is caused in the esophagus when the acid or stomach content backs up. The burning feeling can be in your neck or your chest. You may also have a bitter taste in your mouth, a dry cough, belching, and feeling like you are going to vomit. Your gastroenterologist may decide to do an esophageal pH test which measures how much stomach acid is coming up into the esophagus.

Treatment for Acid Reflux in Katy, TX

The first treatments for acid reflux are lifestyle changes. Reducing the amount of alcohol and coffee that you drink, avoid eating late at night, and don't sleep in a completely reclined position, especially after eating. Stopping smoking and losing excess weight are also high on the list. Talk to your doctor about any prescription medication you are taking that may be aggravating the condition.

OTC medication can also help with occasional acid reflux. If, however, you are using heartburn or acid reflux medication more than twice a week, it is time to make an appointment to see your gastroenterologist.
